Priority 01
Community Safety & Well-Maintained Neighbourhoods
Residents deserve safe neighbourhoods, streets and public spaces. Safe school zones, intersections, crosswalks and sidewalks are basic municipal responsibilities. Getting the basics right means identifying hazards, addressing speeding and traffic concerns, maintaining public spaces and ensuring frontline services keep pace with a growing community.
- Improve crossings, school-zone safety and sidewalks
- Review residential speed limits where speeding and pedestrian safety are concerns, including consideration of 30 km/h on appropriate local streets
- Support consistent speed enforcement and targeted traffic calming where needed
- Review high-collision roadways and intersections and prioritize practical improvements to reduce recurring crashes and improve safety for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists
- Add pedestrian-activated flashing beacons at appropriate unsignalized crosswalks near schools, shopping areas and other high-risk locations
- Continue advocating for an annual city-wide safety review to identify and correct hazards, including obstructed sight lines at stop signs and intersections caused by vegetation, parked vehicles or other obstructions
- Improve crosswalk markings and road lines so they remain visible during dark and wet conditions
- Support prompt pothole repairs and dependable maintenance of streets, sidewalks, parks and playgrounds
- Ensure Fire & Rescue, RCMP, Bylaw and other frontline services have the resources needed to serve a growing community
- Evaluate whether the Northside requires additional or expanded fire hall capacity as population and service demands increase
Compassionate Community Safety
Community safety also means recognizing that serious mental-health, addiction and homelessness challenges often require treatment and support that municipalities cannot provide alone.
