Darin Nielsen for Port Coquitlam Councillor

Darin Nielsen - Common Sense Leadership

Common sense leadership making Port Coquitlam the best and safest city in BC!

I love living in this community I care about, and I am asking for your vote for City Council because I want to contribute and make a difference in improving the quality of life for residents in the city we our proud to call home.

Over the past 14 years, I have shared my vision for Port Coquitlam.   I am delighted that our City Councils have heard my voice and implemented these items which make our city an even better place to proudly call home!

In previous campaigns, I advocated for the following ideas that have been implemented by City  Councils:

    •  installing flashing beacons at crosswalks
    • traffic calming in school and park zones
    • fenced tots lot
    • extra recycling at Xmas
    •  large item pickup
    • Adopt-A-Street (Spot)
    • low taxes & fiscal responsibility
    • garbage bin locks to be provided for free by City for residents
    • not allow City Council to vote themselves pay increases
    • naming the plaza at the Community Centre in honour of Terry Fox

My common sense leadership with my strong voice on behalf of residents will ensure their concerns are addressed to get the job done!  I want to contribute to make Port Coquitlam the best and safest city we  are proud to call home!

Over the last 4 years, I have reached out to residents to listen and learn about issues that concern them.   The issues mentiooned to me include:

    • Build a road next to the Home Depot  off Dominion Ave. to alleviate the traffic congestion at this "gong show" shopping area
    • treat adults like adults at all parks (just like Coquitlam does at its 50 parks)
    • increase Craft Beer seating to 75
    • enhance our youth sports with a covered lacrosse box and a lit Midget baseball field
    • enclose Centennial Pool with a retractable roof for year round usage
    • a covered picnic area on the Northside
    • a washroom at Blakeburn Lagoon
    • Parkour Park for tweens & teens
    • develop a comprehensive plan of action for the PoCo Arts Council
    • curbside glass recycling
    • drivers to learn how to properly use a roundabout!
    • authorize Bylaw Officers to ticket person responsible for leaving a dog in a hot car!
    • eliminate annual dog license fee
    • showcase the PoCo Arts in the city
    • ensure the downtown revitilization is done properly to make it a "destination" for residents and visitors to  want to gather and sociali

However, the top priority of residents I have spoken with is community safety.  This is my #1 priority!  The concerns include:

    •  funding by City Council for the completion of installing flashing beacons at ALL dangerous crosswalks to prevent another tragic death and injury at our crosswalks which happened less than a year ago at 2 different locations...and there is still no flashing beacon at these crosswalks!  Safety must be made the #1 priority!
    • School zones need speed humps at each end plus in the middle
    • schools with playgrounds to be designated playground zones for added safety for our children in effect from dawn to dusk year round

The single biggest concern I have been hearing from residents is speeding and reckless driving along residential neighbourhoods.

    • The demand for speed humps is a priority for residents to make their neighbourhood safer.
    • traffic-calmed neighbourhood is a priority!

Children shoud not have to worry about playing or riding bikes in their neighbourhood.  Parents pushing strollers, people walking dogs, joggers or neighbours chatting should not stressed out in fear and anger that they may be hit or brushed back by a car speeding seeking a short cut through their neighbourhood.

I want to improve the quality of life in our neighbourhoods by enhancing the safety and livability in our residential areas.

Together , we can make Port Coquitlam the best and safest city in BC!  This begins with voting for Darin Nielsen on October 15!

Thank you for your support to allow me to be a strong voice on Council to ensure your priorities are heard.

Lucky husband and proud father of 5 children raised in Port Coquitlam!

I am lucky to be married to my amazing and beautiful wife, Carla.  She truly completes me!

I raised two adult children in Port Coquitlam, and now, together with my wife Carla, we are raising our three children in the city we love to call home.

We enjoy as a family the trails for walking and cycling,  and my children have been participants in youth activities including swimming, soccer, lacrosse, baseball , baseball, dance, and karate in Port Coquitlam.

I am blessed to have my 82 year old mother live with us to share the joys of our children with her, and to assist her with her needs, and to be able to encourage her to be involved with the "super senior" program at our community centre.

I want to ensure Port Coquitlam City Council continues to make our City an even better place to raise a family and every stage of life right up to our residents enjoying their golden years of retirement.

    Taking Back Your Streets!

Quality of life in neighbourhoods needs to improve!

The demand for speed humps properly spaced on local roads is overwhelming!

Residents want to take back their streets by having traffic calming measures implemented (speed humps).

This is the #1 priority of residents in Port Coquitlam to imporove their quality of life in their neighbourhoods.

Drivers seeking shortcuts to avoid traffic jams are frightening and angering people who just want to job, bike, chat or walk their dogs on their own neighbourhood streets.

"It's out of control.  At morning rush hour, it's a spectacle!"  Residents are frustrated with drivers running stop signs, intentionaly using roundabouts incorrectly, and using our streets as speedways.

A resident has described  their concerrn as  the "invasion of cars roaring down our streets designed only for the people who live here."

Neighbours should not have to be expected to confront speeding drivers and get into arguments or shout from their yards and balconies for dirvers to slow down.  The residents want thieir concerns to be heard by City Council and action taken to imporove the quality of life in their neighbourhoods.

    "We want to be heard!"

    Added safety for our children!

Schools with playgrounds should be designated as playground zones dawn to duk year round for added safety for our children!

Speed bumps should be placed at each entrance to the school zone in additoin to one or two speed humps in the middle of the zone.

The Cities solution of placing one speed hump in the middle of the school zone has been ineffective.
