Parks, Sports, Arts & Community Life
Port Coquitlam’s parks, recreation facilities, sports fields and community spaces are an important part of our quality of life. We need to maintain and improve the facilities we already have while planning for the recreational needs of a growing community. This includes improving existing pickleball facilities and adding more courts where needed, supporting baseball, soccer, lacrosse and other community sports, completing recreation projects, and strengthening opportunities for arts, culture, community events and activities that keep children, families and seniors active and connected.
Port Coquitlam has invested in excellent parks, recreation facilities and community amenities. I want to protect and build on those investments while ensuring that promised projects are completed and facilities continue meeting residents’ changing needs.
That means following through on the covered multipurpose sports facility, maintaining and improving sports fields, supporting arts and cultural programming, and providing practical neighbourhood amenities that help children, families and seniors remain active, healthy and connected.
I will advocate for practical neighbourhood amenities—including playgrounds, dog parks, picnic shelters, washrooms, trails and community gardens—in neighbourhoods throughout Port Coquitlam.
I will advocate for:
- Completing the covered multipurpose sports facility within a reasonable period of time and providing residents with clear progress updates
- Maintaining and improving baseball diamonds, soccer fields, lacrosse facilities, artificial-turf fields and other recreational infrastructure
- Protecting and maintaining parks, trails, playgrounds and green spaces throughout Port Coquitlam
- Providing modern, safe and accessible playgrounds for children in neighbourhoods throughout the city
- Expanding practical neighbourhood amenities, including dog parks, picnic shelters, washrooms, community gardens and gathering spaces
- Supporting arts, cultural programming and community events that bring residents together
- Expanding age-friendly recreation and social opportunities for seniors, with a focus on reducing isolation and strengthening community connection
- Exploring free or expanded recreation access for children and youth, without income-testing or requiring families to apply for financial assistance
Outdoor Fitness and Recreation for the North Side
- Port Coquitlam already provides outdoor exercise equipment on the south side, including near Maple Creek and Gates Park. Following a suggestion from a resident, I will advocate for a comparable outdoor fitness and recreation area in a suitable northside park such as Evergreen Park.
- The area could include outdoor exercise equipment and free activities such as table tennis, foosball, volleyball and sand volleyball, giving youth, adults and seniors more opportunities to remain active and connect with others close to home.
